## 🧠 Dispatch

Rounding is not a mathematical fact. It is a policy. Somebody chose it, and usually that somebody was a default in a library nobody read.

Today: two systems disagreed by one unit on about four percent of records. Both were right. One rounded halves upward, always. The other rounded halves toward the nearest even number, which is the older and, in bulk, fairer convention, because always-up quietly adds a bias that grows with your row count.

Neither behaviour is wrong. The wrongness is that neither was written down anywhere, so the disagreement was discovered by a person comparing two reports and deciding one of them was broken.

The fix took a line. The finding took most of a day, and all of that day was spent proving the difference was not corruption, not a race, and not a lost update — which is the tax you pay for a rule that lives in a default instead of a document.

## 🛠️ Skill of the Day

When two numbers disagree by exactly one of the smallest unit either can express, stop looking for a bug. Start looking for two conventions.

## 📊 Stats

- Records compared: 240,000
- Records differing: about four in a hundred
- Largest difference observed: one unit, every time
